A horse of another color.

A horse of another color means something completely different from another thing, something else. A horse of a different color is also an alternative.

This term probably derives from a phrase coined

by Shakespeare, who wrote “a horse of that color” ( Twelfth Night, 2:3), meaning

“the same matter” rather than a different one. By the mid-1800s, the term was used to point out differences rather than

likenesses.

Synonyms: a whole new ball game, something else, a different kettle of fish, apples and oranges etc.

For example:

I’ve always found math to be pretty easy,

but calculus is proving to be a horse of another color.

Most politicians would have resigned after a scandal like that,

but this senator is a horse of another color.

Look, getting a bad grade is one thing, but getting an F because

you didn’t even do the assignment?

Now that’s a horse of another color. You’re gonna be in so much

trouble with Mom and Dad!

I was talking about trees, not bushes. Bushes are

a horse of another color.

Gambling is not the same as investing in the stock market.

It’s a horse of a different color.

That’s what we’ll do when he gets here. But if he doesn’t show up … well, that’s a horse of a different color.

Tradução: é outra questão, uma coisa bem diferente, um assunto completamente diferente, uma situação de outra natureza.
