Live and learn.

The expression “live and learn,” or “you live and learn,” is used to say that one has learned something from an experience that is surprising and usually unpleasant.

For example:

I thought I could trust Bob after all that I did for him, but I couldn’t. Well, live and learn.

She bought an expensive dress that was surprisingly poorly made. It’s disappointing, but you live and learn not to trust every brand.

I tried to assemble that furniture myself, and it took hours. I should have hired someone, but you live and learn.

I’ll never try to ride my bike in the snow again—live and learn!
